Beginners welcome. You do not need to be a yoga teacher or have any prior teaching experience. No dance or yoga experience is required, though both are helpful. If you enjoy moving to music, have a fair amount of energy, and are ready to experience the dance of your own creativity, you can do this training.

Costa Rica is a rugged, rain-forested Central American country and one of the most popular international vacation destinations in the world. Jaco is conveniently located in the center of its Pacific Coast. It’s a popular vacation destination for Costa Ricans and a favorite with surfers. Doce Lunas is one mile from the south end of Jaco Beach in a valley ringed by beautiful jungle-covered mountains.
Capuchin monkeys, toucans, scarlet macaws, kinkajou, arboreal anteaters, crocodiles, sea turtles, whales, dolphins and many more animals make their home in the area. Doce Lunas worked hard to preserve the trees and habitat of the property during construction; you will likely see plenty of wildlife on-site during your stay.
Eclipse, Doce Lunas’ on-site restaurant, offers a mix of local and international cuisine, drawing primarily on locally sourced ingredients. Fresh fruit may come from the many fruit trees on site, and all fish comes from local waters. Meals include fish, poultry, beef, pasta and vegetarian options. If you are gluten-free, vegan, or have other dietary restrictions, please let us know, and the kitchen will do their best to meet your needs.
Jaco is located on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, just 90 minutes from San Jose Airport. Flight is not included. Participants are responsible for booking and purchasing their own flights to and from San Jose (SJO). Two shuttles will run between the airport and Doce Lunas on February 23 and March 5. Please arrange to arrive at SJO by 2:30 pm on Feb 23 and to depart after 1:00 pm on March 5, in order to take advantage of these included shuttles. The training begins with dinner at 6:00 pm on Feb 23, followed by an opening session at 7:30 pm. The training ends at 8:00 am on March 5.
Please note, this is a certification training, and therefore, the daily schedule is demanding. Meal times are spacious, and we will take occasional evenings off, but our days are full. We strongly encourage you to arrive one, two or even three days early in order to have more time to enjoy the local attractions and scenery. Director, Jurian Hughes, E-RYT 500, MFA, is a senior faculty member at Kripalu Center, in Stockbridge, MA, the U.S.’s largest yoga center, where she has trained more than 1,000 Kripalu Yoga teachers since 2006. She is founder of the Yoga of Voice, co-founder of A Wild Life Sanctuary™, co-creator of the Yoga of Yes, a Let Your Yoga Dance® teacher trainer, voice coach, personal mentor, writer, speaker, and theatre performer, known for her passionate, playful, and inspiring teaching style. In addition to her extensive teaching experience, Hughes has a long theatrical resume spanning Broadway, off-Broadway, Europe, film, television and the voice-over industry. Through her own study and decades of practice, she has developed a deep understanding of the ways in which the tools of yoga, dance, voice, mindfulness and play can be used singly and together to promote whole-being wellness, increased creativity, and the ability to thrive. She is dedicated to sharing these tools through her workshops, retreats and trainings at Kripalu and around the world. The core of her practice is authenticity and full self-expression.
In 2005, Jurian took her first dance class at Kripalu with Megha Nancy Buttenheim, founder of Let Your Yoga Dance®. Jurian promptly quit her job, moved her life from New York City to the Berkshires, and has never looked back. She is the creator of the video, Gentle Kripalu Yoga with Jurian Hughes and the audio CD, Deep and Delicious Yoga with Jurian Hughes.
Assistant Director, Missy Brown, E-RYT 500, E-RCYT has dedicated her life to supporting people of all ages open to their true potential. Her passion in empowering others is offered through classes as well as training programs that truly transform lives through play and joy. Using her skills of creativity and playfulness, she fosters experiences where mindfulness and body centered practices are explored with a sense of humor and open hearted authenticity. Missy is the president and founder of Deep Play for Kids, LLC. Her mission is that all people have the safe opportunity to discover, explore and embrace their true limitless self.
With her loving presence Missy has been teaching DPK in schools for 20 years. She is a teacher in the Pranotthan School of Yoga, a Creative Kids School of Yoga trainer, a Let Your Yoga Dance® instructor, and teaches at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health. If you place a deposit, the balance due will be set to charge in equal installments starting the month after deposit through January 2019, unless other arrangements are made.

What is Let Your Yoga Dance®? Let Your Yoga Dance® (LYYD®) is an amazing chakra fusion -- a joy-filled, powerful dance combining yoga, the breath, and user-friendly dance moves with fabulous music from all around the world. It is a funky, sacred, inspirational dance of the multi-dimensional self, bringing tons of fun and healing to body, mind, spirit. Let Your Yoga Dance® is for every single body and wonderful for all ages.
What actually happens in a Let Your Yoga Dance® class? Grace in motion happens. A chakra dance explosion happens. Seven energy centers provide the foundation for this dance of yoga. We dance the yoga of the wild and woolly, the sexy and silly, the deep and delicious. We wrap ourselves in our biggest embodied self while dancing beyond our dreams. We are held in the sacred arms of Mother Earth while simultaneously honoring her. We are shaken to our core by drums and the rhythms of the Earth. We dance our animal archetypes and our spirit prayers. We dance our energy, inviting it to flow upward from the base of our spine up through the crown of the head, and back down to the earth again. Result? A blissful body, a joyous heart, a steady and quiet mind.
What if I’ve never had any dance training? That’s no problem. LYYD® is about finding and releasing the dancer within. As a teacher in training you’ll receive loads of support to help you connect to the joy of dancing freely, with ease and confidence. Then you’ll learn how to help others do the same. Though there’s lots of methodology and tools to learn, it’s not about memorizing moves or turning your body into a pretzel or perfecting a particular way of moving technically. If you love dancing and have never taken a single dance class, you can do this training.
Do I need to be a yoga teacher to take this training? No. It’s helpful to have a yoga practice, though even that is not a pre-requisite. If you don’t practice yoga regularly, start going to classes once or twice a week now. You don’t need to be able to do advanced postures, but it is helpful to be familiar with the foundational poses, to have some familiarity with yoga vocabulary, and to have some basic knowledge of yoga principles. There will be more teaching on this during the training. How do I know if I’m fit enough to take this training? The mission of LYYD® is to spread joy and consciousness throughout the world by transmitting body health, brain health, heart health and soul health to ALL populations. At the core of the practice is accessibility to all. We will be dancing a lot during the training, it’s true, but it won’t be consistently high-energy dancing. Plenty of it will be on the gentler, slower side. There will be periods of relaxing and of sitting in lecture, chanting or discussion. If you can take a brisk walk and climb a set of stairs without being winded you can do this training. To support yourself in preparation for the ten days, consider committing to a regular exercise regimen that includes 30 minutes of moderate cardiovascular activity several times a week.
I’m not sure if I want to teach. Can I still take this training? Of course! We’ll warn you, though, that lots of people have said that over the years, and they often change their mind! This is a certification training with required hours of attendance. To maintain the integrity of the training, we ask that all participants practice punctuality and attend all sessions even if they have no intention to teach.
I’ve never taken a Let Your Yoga Dance® class. That’s all right! Many successful graduates have been in the same situation. LYYD® is often so life-changing that just one experience of it makes people sign up for the training! What will our days be like? Some mornings (though not all) will begin with an hour of morning yoga. This will prepare your body and mind for the day, offer an opportunity to deepen your understanding of yoga postures, provide healthy and safe alignment principles, and increase your vocabulary of postures, breathing techniques and movements on which to build. Following breakfast, we will spend three hours in session – dancing, diving into the chakras through lecture, discussion, visualization and chanting, as well as delving into other pieces of LYYD® methodology. A two-hour lunch break will be followed by another three-hour session, which will include review of what we did in the morning, more dance, opportunities to practice teaching, and time to integrate the lessons of the day. Dinner will sometimes be followed by a short evening session that will focus on less active pieces of LYYD®, as well as chances to connect to others, and to put into practice what you’re learning. Some evenings will be free for you to practice or to unwind. We will always finish our days by 9:00 pm, so that you have plenty of time to rest for the following day. We’ll also take off two half days during the training, to give you a chance to “catch up” and to experience the gift of being in beautiful Costa Rica!
I have an old injury (or some other physical limitation). Is this right for me? The mission of LYYD® is to spread joy and consciousness throughout the world by transmitting body health, brain health, heart health and soul health to ALL populations. At the core of the practice is accessibility to all. That said, we don’t want you to injure yourself further during the training. It’s certainly fine to spend a session or two dancing in a chair if need be, and you’re always welcome to dance at a lower intensity, but it’s not recommended that you do this training if dancing or being active is going to cause you pain or suffering.
I’ve never taught before. Will this be too overwhelming? You do not need any teaching experience to take this training. You do not need to be a fan of public speaking or an extrovert. In our experience, the training itself cultivates a tremendous amount of self-confidence. There may be emotionally powerful moments for you as you conquer old demons that have kept you from taking a role “at the front of the room”, and we think you will be truly – and very pleasantly – surprised at what you find yourself capable of. Compassion for self and others is essential to the teachings of LYYD®, and we think you’ll discover that it creates a very supportive learning environment.
What kind of music will be used? All different kinds! Everything you can think of! We will use contemporary yoga music, old-school funk, African drums, Latin rhythms, instrumental music, music with words, music from the radio, folk songs and more.
Can I use my own music once I graduate? Yes. During the training we’ll ask you to practice with the music we’ve chosen, but you’ll learn to hear a song and know what chakra it belongs to, regardless of what style it is. You’ll discover that all music can be heard through the lens of the chakras. Once you have a sense of the chakras and how to choose music to create the arc of a LYYD® class, you can use any music you like.
What kind of support is offered after I’m certified? The Let Your Yoga Dance® Teachers Association is a phenomenal resource. Upon graduation you’ll receive a free trial membership. Once that expires, you can join the Association for a low annual fee, which gives you access to thousands of videos and other resources – playlists, suggestions for moves, choreography, marketing tools, and more. In addition, the LYYD® family is a big and loving community, and you will be shocked to find how much emotional and very practical support is right at your fingertips.
Can I begin teaching when the training is over? Yes, if you attend all sessions, are punctual, have a successful practice teach in which you demonstrate an understanding of LYYD® methodology, and you have conducted yourself in a professional and ethical manner throughout the training, you will be a certified Let Your Yoga Dance® instructor, ready to go out and begin teaching!
How is this different from Nia? Five Rhythms? Shake Your Soul? JourneyDance? Soul Motion, etc? All of these dance practices could be categorized as Conscious Dance. They have in common a desire to connect the dancer to him or herself through movement. Each one does this in a different way. Let Your Yoga Dance® uses the ancient yogic map of the chakras as its foundation. The arc of a LYYD® class moves us through various qualities of movement associated with the elements, so we move with earth, water, fire, air, sound, light and ether, dancing to experience those qualities in us.
What do I wear? Light, comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely in a warm, humid climate. Many people enjoy dancing barefoot, but some prefer – or require – more foot, ankle or knee support. If that’s the case, consider the Bloch Boost Dance Sneaker, Bloch Pro Elastic Ballet Slipper, Capezio Show Stopper Jazz Dance Shoe, ToeSox Releve Half Toe Grip, or something similar. All are available at Amazon or dance suppliers. You may also find that a simple pair of lightweight sneakers works well.
Can I work while I’m there? It’s not recommended. Though you will have access to Wi-Fi, the schedule is demanding. Most people enjoy disconnecting from work as much as possible during the training. It’s not realistic to expect that you’ll be able to be in constant contact with an employer or employees. You will certainly be able to check-in daily with the world, but you will not be able to maintain a regular work load.

TRAVEL, ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND FAQs
Start looking now! Flights are currently as low as $500 round-trip from multiple destinations! Set up an alert on Skyscanner to be kept up to date on the best deals. Once you’ve set up an alert it will email you so that you can see when flight prices change. Some sites where you can search for tickets include: Kayak, Travelocity, Priceline, and Orbitz.
Arrange to arrive at San Jose Airport (SJO) in Costa Rica on Wednesday, February 23, 2019 no later than 2:30 pm. Some people benefit from arriving a day early and staying at a nearby hotel. Hotel recommendations in San Jose include Hotel Aranjuez, Hotel Grano de Oro San Jose, and Apartotel la Sabana. Hotels very close to the airport include Best Western Irazu Hotel and Casino, and Hampton Inn and Suites by Hilton San Jose Airport. Typically, whatever hotel you choose will make airport transport arrangements for you, but confirm this before booking.
There will be two or more shuttles departing for Doce Lunas on February 23. If you arrive the night before, there will be a morning shuttle (time TBD) for you to take. Later shuttle(s) will depart SJO in the afternoon (time TBD). The exact times will depend on flight arrivals and will be determined later.
Doce Lunas is located approximately 90 minutes from SJO airport. If your flight is canceled or experiences a major delay we will help facilitate transportation for you to Doce Lunas, though you may be responsible for the cost. Most Travel Insurance will cover this.
A valid passport is mandatory to enter Costa Rica. Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after you depart for Costa Rica. (This is common for most international travel.) The Costa Rican government does not currently require US citizens staying fewer than 90 days to obtain visas, but your passport will be stamped, and your stay is not to exceed 90 days.
Arrange to fly out of Costa Rica on March 5, 2018, departing no earlier than 1:00 pm. You may choose to extend your stay with a few days in Monteverde, Poas, Manuel Antonio, Nosara or elsewhere in Costa Rica. If you choose to extend your stay (and not return to San Jose Airport on March 5) you will be responsible for arranging and paying for your transportation. Doce Lunas staff will be happy to support you with coordinating personal shuttles.
You may be familiar with Costa Rica’s $29 departure tax, which applies to all passengers, citizens of Costa Rica and foreigners, minors and adults. Before 2106 this had to be paid at the airport before exiting the country. It is now included in the cost of most airline tickets, including AeroMéxico, Air Panamá, Air Canada, American Airlines, Grupo Avianca, Copa, Delta, VECA, Jet Blue, Southwest, United, Alaska, IBERIA, Interjet and Volaris.

January through April is dry season in Costa Rica, with little rainfall. Bright blue skies are common this time of year, with an occasional partly cloudy day and rarely overcast. Temperatures typically range from low 70s in the morning to maximum high temperatures in the 90s. Daytime highs are usually in the 80s. You will find it cooler at Doce Lunas, partly because of the mountain it sits beneath, partly because it is surrounded by fields and jungle, and also because they have preserved the jungle canopy throughout the grounds so the hotel remains shady and pleasantly dappled with sun.
